This past Saturday we hosted well over 100 volunteers at our first annual Fall Work Day. Our sincere thanks to all who joined us, some of you coming from as far as Houston, Denver and Lincoln!
The conditions were clement and clear – an exceptional instance of October’s bright blue weather. We accomplished an amazing amount of work in a short period of time and the evening finished with a feast and a mighty round of craic, as the Irish say.
A few images help tell the tale:
Mike Lipic and a stalwart crew clear the hillside near Theotokos Hall
David Meyer swinging a hammer at the foot-bridge
Magister elucidating the finer points of rustic bridge building with David’s older brother, Israel
Mr. Taylor, wearing his vest of legitimate authority, oversees the construction of a traditional fence stile
Nate Jones discovering that 3 feet deep in Kansas clay is no picnic
SGA Dad, Dan Harrington builds a beautiful gate to fortify the railings at the Tree Tent
The Devons and calves enjoy the beautiful day with Theotokos Hall in the background
10th Grader Henry Hickey helps Food Boss Seb Macik stir the pit beans.
Before dinner, it’s tug of war. The students, vastly outnumbering their opponent, take their position.
And then crumple and fall under the unstoppable force that is the faculty!!
10th Grader James Cummings gladly took one for his team.
Dinner time. Pulled pork and ribs from our own hogs were featured.
Light ‘er up.
The fire takes hold
Flames as high as 20 feet illuminate the grounds and radiate warmth
9th Grader David Meyers calls the crowd to order with his bagpipes
The boys conclude the evening in song
